Abstract
The aim of this report is to analyze security challenges to Italy coming from the Mediterranean. Three main issues have been identified as the most urgent and important. First of all, political and institutional stabilization of the region, one example for all is Libya. A country so close to our shores that is struggling for a new definition of the state among jihadist formations, tribes and sects. MENA countries have been shaken by a political earthquake that has reshaped the region and created a new uneasily readable geopolitical paradigm. Secondly, fighting against terrorism and jihadism in its various forms. Al-Qaeda and Da’ish are complex phenomena whose weight goes beyond its local power but has repercussion on regional level (Syrian crisis), and international level (foreign fighters and jihadist propaganda). Hard choices need to be taken to deal with the Islamic State on a military level, financial and ideological level both inside Arab countries and in the West. Thirdly, possible solutions to the rising migratory flow towards our peninsula. Italy is a transit country but has the duty of examining and processing applications for asylum seekers. Immigration could bore positive contributions to Italy but long term solutions need to be found and implemented in Europe and on a regional level tackling the structural causes of mass migration, namely political instability, human insecurity, and poverty.
